IT’S a popular feature in the ski resorts in the Alps and was a must-have at parties in the 70s – now fondue has been brought to the streets of York.
Retro Fondue is the latest venture of Mark Myers, who has opened what is believed to be York’s first fondue café in Goodramgate.
Offering both cheese and chocolate dips, the cafe employs three full-time staff, and already has franchise plans in the pipeline.
Mr Myers, who set up the business having returned to the UK from Australia, said: “Most of the ideas that have gone into the business have come from places we have been to around the world.
“We knew we wanted to do something different. There are hundreds of cafés all around York, and we wanted to set ourselves apart from that.
“This café space, which was formerly the National Trust Café, became available and we thought it was the ideal place at the ideal time.
“Eventually we are looking to franchise the business, and have built a franchise model that is ready to go.
“We just have to build and grow what we have created here first and spread the word.”
