A BUTCHER’S career is going with a bang-er after he was named Young Sausage Maker of the Year.
Michael Smith, 24, of Pocklington, took the champion title at the BPEX Regional Roadshow at Harrogate Showground.
Michael has competed for the title every year since starting work as a butcher at Ainsty Farm Shop, Green Hammerton, three years ago.
As this was his last year of eligibility for the title, Michael said he was ecstatic at winning.
“I was told on my first day that a customer’s first impression of any butcher’s shop is its pork sausages and minced beef, so these products have to be right and when it comes to a competition of such a high standard, only the best quality will do. The technical ability plays a major part in the judges’ scoring.”
The BPEX Roadshows have been running for ten years to bring together in competition butchers from around the region with their best pork products, including sausages, bacon and pies. The shop also won gold awards for its hog roast sausage and haggis, neep and tattie pie.
