ELECTRICAL cables in one of Saudi Arabia’s biggest construction projects are being supported on site by cleats made in Ryedale.

The Shamiya Haram, part of the holy mosque in the city of Mecca, is undergoing the biggest expansion in its history in order to place it in a central location and increase its capacity fourfold to hold 2.25 million worshippers.

Rillington-based cable cleat manufacturer Ellis has been contracted to supply its cleats for the project. They will be used to secure power cables throughout its 75,000sq metre central utility complex, which when complete will serve the 1.4 million sq metre Haram.

Ellis export director Tony Conroy said: “The size and complexity of this project needs to be seen to be believed.

“The expanded Shamiya Haram will be the size of a small town and, as you’d expect of any project of this scale, the technical infrastructure supporting it is extensive, to say the very least.”

The order for Ellis’ Emperor cleats was secured by its Saudi Arabian distributor, Mena Arabia, who said a key part of securing the specification was the fact all nuts and bolts were supplied in stainless steel.

Mr Conroy said: “Our ever-growing global network of distributors is an imperative part of our export success.

“They ensure the Ellis name is never far from the thoughts of specifiers, meaning there are very few major construction or electrical projects that our products are not in contention for, no matter where in the world they are located.”
