TWO North Yorkshire businesses have been shortlisted in an awards scheme for family run firms.

Hunmanby microbrewery Wold Top Brewery and Acaster Malbis-based icecream makers Yorvale are in the running for Red Ribbon Awards.

Hosted by Family Business Place, the Red Ribbon awards are the UK's only national awards that recognise the achievements of family-run companies of all sizes and across all sectors.

Wold Top Brewery has been shortlisted in two awards categories; ‘Corporate Social Responsibility' as a result of the brewery's green credentials and Alex Balchin has been shortlisted for the ‘Young Gun' award that recognizes a talented next generation member.

Yorvale has been shortlisted in the Small Business Category.

This month has also seen Wold Top Brewery win a place in the final of the Chairman's of East Yorkshire's Business Award for Businesses with Under 50 Employees.

Kate Balchin, a fourth generation family member at the brewery, and wife of nominee Alex, said: "We were delighted to win the Red Ribbon award for ‘Innovation' last year and to be shortlisted again is something that we're all very proud of.

"The Red Ribbon awards are great for smaller businesses like ours as they enable us to compete against big brands."

Equally pleased to be shortlisted is Yorvale director Lesley Buxton, who started the award winning business 25 years ago with her husband, Ian.

She said: "This is the first time that we have entered the Red Ribbon awards and we're very proud to have reached the final and to put the Vale of York on the family business map."

The winners will be announced at the 2014 Red Ribbon Awards Ceremony in June.
