TOP sheepdog breeder and handler John Bell started the new year as he ended the old by yet again achieving top price at Skipton Auction Mart's opening seasonal sale of working sheepdogs.
John, of Howden, near Selby, who headed the prices at Skipton's previous fixture last autumn, repeated the feat at the New Year sale of 79 working sheepdogs, - and for a record-breaking 11th time in the past seven years.
His top dog this time was Nan, an 18-month-old black and white bitch, who headed the prices at 2,400 guineas (£2,560) when joining Roger Jewitt, of Naburn, York.
Nan is by Daz, from well-known Southern Ireland handler Tony Kearins, of County Sligo, out of M Walch's Jill.
When put through her paces in the field at Skipton, Nan showed style, power and balance, coupled with all-round capabilities on outrun, lift, fetch and drive.
Although untrialled to date after having a litter of pups, Nan appears an exceptional prospect and her new handler Roger Jewitt will use her as both a working dog on his arable and sheep farm and enter her in novice trials.
Nan is the third dog Roger has bought from John Bell. He has had considerable success on the trials field with his first two acquisitions, including becoming the Ryedale club's best novice handler.
