BUSINESSES in York have welcomed the decision to make York-born Vince Cable Business Secretary.
Gary Williamson, chief executive at Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce said that Mr Cable, who was born in the city and went to Nunthorpe Grammar School, now Millthorpe School, was popular with many small and medium-sized companies.
He said: “His work as the Liberal Democrats’ Shadow Chancellor means that he knows where the UK fits within a global context, and the important role the private sector will play in driving future job creation and economic growth. His relentless focus on making sure that the banks lend to viable, credit-worthy businesses will be a critical part of his new position.
Coun Andrew Waller, Liberal Democrat Leader of City of York Council, added: “It is good news that York-born Vince Cable has been appointed as Business Secretary from the point of view of having someone who understands the need for the banks to lend for businesses to grow and increase employment.”
