A well-established York solicitors’ practice is both rebranding and relocating, with the prospect of taking on six more jobs this year.

Burn & Co is leaving Lendal House in Lendal in July, after 30 years, to move into its £750,000 investment – a larger, purpose-built headquarters half the size again being erected in Millfield Lane, Poppleton, opposite the new Manor School.

At the same time, it becomes among the first 200 law firms in the UK who have signed up to relaunch under the QualitySolicitors brand to provide “no frills” legal advice on conveyancing, consumer and contract disputes and family law.

It is an attempt by solicitors nationally to head off competition from the Co-op supermarket chain and the Halifax, which are poised to enter the legal market.

QualitySolicitors Burn & Company will be relaunched at a reception in Lendal House on Monday, attended by the Mayor of York, Councillor John Galvin, and 20 of the practice’s long-standing clients.

Graeme Burn, whose father, Raymond, started the company, said the 20 staff at Lendal House were preparing to move into their new premises.

An office in Easingwold would be retained.

“We have been crammed to capacity here, so the new offices in Millfield Lane will come as a relief and free us up to take on more staff – perhaps six new solicitors and lawyers this year.

“It is going to give us the ability to increase our quality service to clients and improve our IT service.

“We will be more accessible to our clients with car parking.

“It is also on a bus route, and being on the ring road will be easily accessible to clients living in North, South and West Yorkshire.”

The building will also incorporate a warehouse where documents, formerly kept in the attic and cellar at Lendal House could be stored.
