FIFTH generation steelman George Thompson has appointed business director for Sersa (UK) Ltd, at the York branch of the Swiss group.
Mr Thompson, 53, who for 26 years worked for steelmaker Corus as commercial sales director for railway tracks throughout Europe, arrives at the Auster Road, Clifton Moor operation at a crucial time.
It is bidding for major projects both within Network Rail and the private sector.
The successful 350 million Euro Swiss corporation recently won authorisation from the SNCF to carry out track work throughout France.
There is a core staff at Clifton Moor of ten people, but this could expand given new contracts which take advantage of the firm’s track welding skills.
