JOHNSON Fuel Supplies, the Malton-based coal merchant, has been bought by a one of the UK’s largest coal merchant and smokeless fuel manufacturers as its chief executive retires.

Howard Johnson, chief executive of Johnson Fuel Supplies, announced his retirement today after 30 years in the trade.

He reassured customers that high levels of service would continue as he hands over the firm’s operations in Malton and North Yorkshire to Chesterfield-based CPL Industries.

Mr Johnson said CPL Industries would serve the firm’s existing fuel customers with an even wider range of products.

“We have worked closely with CPL over the years. Not only do they have a wealth of experience in the industry that will allow them to continue to serve our loyal customers to the upmost standards, but they also have the capability to enhance and secure the future of the solid fuels industry, an element that was crucial to our decision. They are the best in the business so I know that my depot will be in safe hands,” he said.

CPL said it plans to use as many of Johnson Fuel Supplies existing operations as possible. The current delivery fleet will continue to distribute fuel in the region.

Stuart Keith, area manager of CPL Distribution said: “We are honoured to have been chosen by Mr Johnson to take over his operations in Malton and the North Yorkshire Region as his contribution to the industry over the past three decades has been inspirational. Customers should feel confident that while we are a national firm we take great pride in our regional operations and we cannot wait to begin.”
