A REFURBISHMENT and rebranding of Banks in York, Britain’s oldest music store, is now complete at a cost of £200,000.
Banks, of Lendal, which was established in 1756 sharing a birthday with Mozart, was bought out by Musicroom Group in 2004.
With its refit and rebranding to Banks Musicroom, it is now regarded as the group’s flagship.
It has three floors dedicated purely to music. The refitted piano room offers a selection of the leading brands laid out to create a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere for budding pianists to try out the available models.
There is also a dedicated classical guitar room, where people can peruse the instruments; a hugely extended drum and electric guitar department; and an extended woodwind and brass department.
Andrew Nixon, store manager, said: “The aim of the refit was to create a one-stop shop for musicians – all instruments, all genres, all levels.
“It is important for people to feel comfortable and relaxed here, which is why we have focused on zoning areas and creating a natural flow to the store.
“Hopefully, we have succeeded in our aim our customers are sure to let us know.”
Other improvements include the addition of an Education Resource Centre – a new initiative to help and support teachers of music in their job of nurturing young talent.
All this is in addition to the vast selection of sheet music famously available from the store.
The store staff are all musicians, able to offer advice, guidance and support on any aspect of music.
