TURF and topsoil business Rolawn has announced big expansion plans as it branches out into new products.
The Elvington-based business has acquired Hallstone Developments Limited (HDL), which gives Rolawn a more diversified product base to supply to its network of landscapers, builders merchants Paul Dawson, managing director of Rolawn, said the business has previously grown organically through increasing its sales, but it has ambitious plans for making use of its distribution system.
HDL, which has the necessary waste licences and environmental permits required to take in various materials which are suitable for composting and making into topsoil, bark mulch, decorative aggregates, de-icing salt and sandbags.
It will operate as a separate company selling Hallstone branded products to Rolawn’s distribution network, and can supply Rolawn with composts for use in its various topsoil mixes.
Paul said: “Rolawn is famous throughout the UK for its turf and topsoil but we have a very efficient distribution system and access to thousands of landscapers and builders merchants we could sell other products into.
“Rolawn is very much about turf and topsoil so to go beyond that would dilute the Rolawn brand. Hallstone gives us the opportunity to supply new products you wouldn’t associate with lawns.”
Rolawn acquired the small company, which had no employees other than the owner, and its composting facility in East Yorkshire. He said the acquisition will generate future growth for the Rolawn’s 100 employees.
“It’s a small company at the moment, but the idea is, as the economy recovers, to grow of the business and it’s fair to say that we have got ambitious plans for growth of Hallstone and Rolawn.
“It’s a busy time and I’m looking forward to spring when we will start putting these plans in action,” he said.
