THE ANCIENT guilds of York are to talk about their heritage and future at an event for businesses in York.

Graham Millar, the new master of the Merchant Taylors, will be joined by other guild chiefs, including the Master of the Guild of Scriveners, Graeme Robertson, at the event at the Merchant Taylors Hall, in Aldwark on Thursday at 6pm.

They will speak about the great history of the organisations and their place in today’s society.

Mr Millar said: “It is fantastic for people to understand something about the history of the guilds and what they do now.”

Richard Taylor, clerk of the Merchant Taylors, said: “The Merchant Taylors supports people in the arts and music, sponsoring fashion prizes at York College, and supporting young people to attend places like the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.”

It also supports people in obtaining apprenticeships and bursaries to work in traditional crafts through the York Consortium of Conservation and Craftsmanship, and maintains the unique medieval Merchant Taylors Hall, which is open to the public by appointment.

Make-York, the young professionals organisation, is hosting the event in association with York Professionals.
