YORK’S English Language Centre (ELC), which teaches English to foreign students, has been acquired by student travel business TUI Education, a division of TUI Travel PLC.

The ELC’s 28 staff will transfer to TUI, which also owns the Hampstead School Of English and the Manchester Academy Of English.

The centre, which has 18 classrooms across three Grade II listed Georgian properties in New Street, with accommodation at Cornmill Lodge, received 1,000 students last year.

Husband–and-wife founding team Judy and Hugh MacDermot will continue as consultants.

Judy said: “The market for English language courses in the UK has evolved beyond recognition since we first set up ELC York 14 years ago.”

Hugh said: “We are delighted that ELC York has been purchased by TUI Education as it will enable us to embed our expertise in global markets across the entire language portfolio while we take advantage of TUI’s own language travel expertise and financial backing.”
