TWO brothers who have set up a catering business have revamped a York city-centre café and bistro.
Chris and Nick Hill have bought the Café On The Square at 28 Colliergate to reopen as a new café and bistro, called Square One.
The converted 16th century townhouse, which overlooks Kings Square and was once used in medieval times for trading coal, will reopen as Square One today.
The young entrepreneurs, aged 27 and 25 respectively, both previously worked as chefs before they decided to go into business.
They set up their business, Yorkshire Table, when they took over the Aldwark Arms outside York three years ago and now, as well as adding a city centre venue to the business, they have further plans to expand into wholesale and outside catering, Chris said.
Nick said the menu would be similar to the food served at the Aldwark Arms, and they would make use of facilities, such as their own smoker for fish and meats, across the two venues.
The building also has a private function room upstairs, which has been refurbished for corporate events and parties. He said: “We have redecorated the café, put in new furniture, a new bar and new kitchen. It’s completely different.”
Square One, which has created ten new jobs, also plans to take a stand at York Food Festival, said Chris.
