SOME people like them, others don't. For Ann, they are a definite no, which explains how I came to be snacking alone this week.

This is one of York's newest eating spots. It was not clear if it is a franchise operation or unique to the city.

An overheard conversation suggested provisions were being ordered direct from a Leeds supplier by the person I took to be in charge of the premises.

The menu invites customers to choose a bagel, pick a filling and grab a drink. Maybe this is aimed at the take-away trade.

For me it was order at the servery and await delivery to the table.

There was no shortage of bagels. Varieties ranged from plain to the exotic. Cheese and jalapeno was intriguing and maybe one to try next time.

Fillings are classified as classic and deli. Grilled halloumi and Milano salami featured in the latter group.

I chose pastrami in a plain bagel (£3.20). The bagel was good with a tasty filling and exactly what I expected.

The menu also advertised a wide selection of cakes and muffins, but where were they? I could only find muffins. My cherry muffin was light and very fresh. However, its wrapper said best before the end of June. I couldn't help wondering what it would taste like in two months' time.

Service starts early with breakfast bagels of bacon and scrambled egg, fruit muesli and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Later in the day, there is soup (£2) and a range of salads (£3).

Coffees are priced £1.30 to £2.

Smoothies (£2.50) and yoghurt juice £2.75 complete the fare.

For me it was a mug of tea (complete with tea bag) at £1.50.

If you like bagels, this is the place to try. But I do recall a previous venue specialising in this type of food and it is no more.
