SHARING the facilities with a wedding party could have been a problem, had we been competing for service.

However, we needn't have worried because the service in the bar was very attentive.

The menu invited us to relax and linger in the beautiful surroundings of this charming building, which is partially hidden from the road. We had been attracted by an advert and keen to experience "the friendly welcoming staff and sensible prices".

The wood-panelled bar is comfortably furnished. On a hot day you may even be tempted to sit outside overlooking the gardens.

We decided to skip the soup and Yorkshire puddings (both £2.75). Jacket potatoes (£4.50) were a possibility, but the main courses at £6.50/£7 were beyond our budget.

Orders were taken at the bar. From the list of fresh salad platters (£5.95), which included beef, ham, ploughman's and prawn with melon, Ann selected hot poached salmon. This came with bloomer bread. We had to ask for butter!

Ann was most impressed with the salad. Asparagus, peppers, carrot, tomato, cucumber, silverskin onions, potatoes and leaves. What more could she ask? There was soon one very satisfied customer.

I decided to combine a starter with a pudding. The chicken liver pate came nicely garnished and with ample fresh toast. The whole was entirely to my taste.

To conclude, I requested brandy snap basket. This was delightfully presented with plenty of fruit (apple, melon, plum, orange, mandarin and starfruit).

The staff were quietly and quickly efficient. At one stage I dropped my knife. Someone was immediately at my side with a replacement knife and fork and the comment that "I am not sure which one you dropped, so I have brought you both".

Tea and coffee with home made biscuits are advertised as being available all day at £1.75. Bar snacks and lunch are served from noon to 2pm, with dinner and snacks from 6.30 to 9pm.

We enjoyed our snack, but will leave it for you to judge if the food is offered at "sensible prices".
