CHILDREN are going wild over a new outdoor study area planned for their school.
Sand Hutton CE School, north-east of York, has been granted more than £8,000 in Lottery funding to help adapt the woodland and meadows surrounding the school into a learning area.
“Going Wild at Sand Hutton” will include a shelter with a work bench, a bog garden, a bee and butterfly garden, a nature trail, a, board walk and decking.
The scheme was granted funding after the school’s parent and teacher foundation started the fundraising and mum Lisa Tinwell put forward a bid to the Big Lottery.
Head teacher Janet Wardell said: “Our school is set in lovely grounds, so we are taking advantage of them to the benefit of the children because the projects they will be able to pursue will cover so many parts of the school curriculum, especially science.
“It will help to teach the children the fragility of nature and wildlife.”
The 150-year-old school, which has 66 pupils, was recently described as “outstanding” by the Church of England education authorities.
