PENSIONERS at a York church are learning how to tweet and sell things over the internet.

Ed Cooke, the IT expert for Trinity Methodist Church and Clifton Moor Church, already tweets to raise awareness of the churches’ events and has his own blog.

After obtaining some old computers through the University of York’s computer recycling scheme, he started giving lessons.

Lilian Hugill, 81, decided to improve her skills after receiving a new laptop last Christmas.

She said she has learned keyboard shortcuts and can now send emails confidently.

Margaret Ford, also in her 80s, used to type out letters and print them off to post, but now sends emails and 53-year-old Val Alston is now doing a Learn Direct foundation course in IT.

The group has also tried to sell things on eBay and GumTree, said Lilian.

She said: “We have quite a few books we’re selling at the church and we decided to try to sell one or two online.

“All these things I couldn’t do, now I can do by myself and it feels marvellous.

“Ed is just the person to teach us because he gives you lots of time.”

In the next stage of the course, Ed will be teaching more about social media, including Twitter. To take part in the next course, phone him on 0844 704 3586.
