THE Kingsway West Area Action Project was launched in 2008 in the wake of the last Government study of deprivation in England, which placed it in the top ten per cent of poverty-hit areas.
It was run as a pilot scheme and its chief aim was to get people into employment. Its methods included setting up an information and advice network and raising the profile of the Future Prospects group, which carried out door-to-door surveys to assess individual residents’ job situation and point them towards potential employers.
The project involved City of York Council, North Yorkshire Police, the NHS and other organisations, and its work contributed to a 21 per cent fall in the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance between April and July last year, compared to a York-wide average of 12 per cent.
It was later rolled out to the Foxwood and Chapelfields areas.
