THE Burning Duck Comedy Club, York's self-styled alternative comedy solution, signs off for 2014 with "the IT Rock'n'Roll Consultants from the Future", otherwise known as Foxdog Studios, on Monday night at the Black Swan, Peasholme Green.
"Attempting to become successful entrepreneurs, two genuine IT consultants have left their living room and combined their interactive computer programmes with rock‘n’roll," explains Burning Duck promoter Al Greaves. "It’s entertainment from the future for an audience of the present.
"Foxdog Studios made their Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut this year and their show was given a five-star review by Broadway Baby, who wrote, 'If Flight Of The Conchords met Moss from the IT Crowd, and they had two illegitimate love children that they then left in a room unsupervised, this would be the result'."
Welcoming the Foxdog duo to York, Al says: "I'm very excited to have booked Foxdog Studios to headline this month's show, as I recently shared a bill with them myself and I was blown away by their exuberance, punctuality and hilariously inventive use of interactive technology. They even bring their own router."
Rising star Jack Gleadow, the Hull Comedian of the Year (CORECT), opens Monday's show.
"He's quickly becoming one of comedy’s hot talents and he's entertaining audiences all around the country with his quickfire wit, one-liners and off-the-wall improvisations," says Al.
"Jack spent his younger years as an international comedy magician, winning British and international comedy and magic awards, but now he has ditched the wand for the mic and will be actively discouraged from performing any magic on stage."
Gina Jenkinson's cheerily dark anecdotes will be on the 8.15pm bill too, introduced by compere Jed Salisbury. Tickets cost £4 in advance online at burningduckcomedy.com or £5 (students £4) on the door from 8pm.
"From next year, we'll be holding the club every second Tuesday in the month," says Al. "I'm now negotiating with high-profile names, though I want to mix it up with both well established and emerging headline acts."
Al is keeping the names for 2015 under wraps, but confirms he has booked Edinburgh Fringe award nominees and winners and acts from BBC Radio 4, BBC1's Live At The Apollo and BBC3's Russell Howard's Good News, plus up-and-coming Yorkshire performers. Watch this space for more concrete details soon.
"While Foxdog Studios may not yet have the profile of some of our other bookings, we want the Burning Duck Comedy Club to earn a reputation for showcasing performers who, in our opinion, are the funniest, most inventive emerging comedy acts, regardless of whether or not they have (yet) been on television or won any prestigious accolades," says Al.
"Our second night took place last month featuring headline act sketch group Gein's Family Giftshop and was very well received. We nearly sold out, so we recommend tickets are purchased early for Monday in order to avoid disappointment. Some earlybird tickets at the ridiculously good value of £3 may still be on sale at the time of going to print."
