SARA Pascoe has plenty of successes under her belt, from appearances on QI to her role in BBC2 mockumentary W1A, but stand-up is where she really brings her A-game.
The 2014 Fosters Award-nominated show, Sara Pascoe vs History, has not received praise enough. After an unexpectedly “Andy Kaufman” start to the show, Pascoe launches into her set, delving into the many realms of personal histories, evolutionary traits, and hopes for the future.
Her material is not only current (including topics such as Robin Thicke’s contentious 2013 song Blurred Lines and the recent triumph for the No More Page 3 campaign), but incredibly intellectual.
Pascoe excavates rare gems of history, such as psychoanalyst Mari Bonaparte’s self-experiments, and warps them to her comic talents.
Highlights also include the sixth-form Pascoe’s screenplay, a pursuit of Take That, and the concept of a cracker sandwich.
A self-professed fan of keeping the audience interaction out of her ways, Pascoe nonetheless had us captivated with her pearls of wisdom. When the moment called for it, she also channelled her awkwardly liberal mother’s approach to sex education when defining certain terms for a confused portion of the crowd, showing her supreme control over them.
Sara Pascoe takes history by the horns, leading the audience on a romp, revealing the realities behind some of the most famous relationships and answering the big questions about where evolution will take us next.
It is a tour de force and definitely not to be missed on its 50-date tour.
