THE Saltbox Gallery in Helmsley is showcasing the watercolours of Whitby artist Richard Pottas and hand-made ceramic birds by Gordon Broadhurst from near Masham.
Richard’s paintings display his relationship with the Languedoc region in south west France.
“Most of his paintings are done from memories and his lasting impressions of the region,” says gallery co-owner Louise Dwyer.
“Through his use of a beautiful colour palette, combined with fluid brushstrokes, the artist transports the viewer to another place. Looking at a Richard Pottas landscape, you can feel the deep warmth and see a midday haze rising from the earth, and through the abundant bright and colourful undergrowth to distant hills beyond, his landscapes are a detailed exploration of structures within vegetation.”
Gordon Broadhurst’s Messenger range of ceramic sculpture is based on the carrier pigeon.
“From this simple source of inspiration, he has created a beautiful sculptural form,” says Louise.
“His pigeons are decorative, stylized birds that are available either as stand-alone pieces or delightful small birdbaths, each in an individual design.”
Later this year, the Saltbox will be exhibiting Gordon’s larger sculptural work. His present exhibition pieces range in price from £80 to £400, while Richard’s paintings cost £395 to £2,250.
The show runs until the end of May; opening hours are 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and 12 noon to 4pm on Sundays.
