DOUGLAS GRAY'S third exhibition of figurative and landscape paintings at the Blake Gallery, in Blake Street, York, opens today.

Born in Harrogate in 1965, he graduated with a Higher National Diploma in advertising and design, achieving a distinction in illustration.

Douglas launched his career as a poster designer for Athena International, but was soon lured into the world of advertising, where he worked for Pepsi and Universal Studios in the USA and companies in Australia and the Far East.

Douglas turned his attention to designing book jackets for major British publishers, while portraiture provided his entry into fine art and his portraits made an impression on celebrity collectors.

Finding his creativity stifled by working to order, Douglas decided to go his own way by painting figurative and landscape images. This proved to be the right decision and he has since spent much time in the last few years painting in Europe and winning national awards.

His work is now collected worldwide, and he has exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Marine Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Oil and Royal Society of British Artists and will add to the list later this year.

His latest show will run at the Blake Gallery until April 28. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm; closed Tuesday and Sunday.
