THE Mercer Gallery's Victorian art show by William Powell Frith has opened in Harrogate to a great fanfare. Normally an admission charge for visitors applies, but today entry is free from 10am to 5pm.
Billed as "Harrogate's biggest ever exhibition", Painting The Victorian Age brings together Frith's three iconic modern-life panoramas: Life At The Seaside (Ramsgate Sands), lent by Her Majesty The Queen; Derby Day (Tate); and The Railway Station (Royal Holloway College, University of London).
The exhibition charts the life and career of Frith (1819-1909), from his childhood copies of Dutch prints to his first success with pictures drawn from historical and literary sources, such as his great friend Charles Dickens, through to his social panoramas and his late moralising series The Race For Wealth and The Road To Ruin.
Further free Frith days follow on May 25 and June 29.
