PERFORMING monks have been seen roaming the streets of Harrogate - and they will soon be in York.

Dressed in beige habits and silver moulded masks, the Cyber-Monks have been handing out leaflets to promote a new exhibition of Damien Hirst's artwork.

The exhibition, Life, Death And Religion, is being held at the Tribal Arts Gallery, part of the Rb Gallery in Harrogate.

Alison Brierley, owner of Tribal Arts, said she wanted the monks to get people thinking.

"Monks obviously represent religion, but our futuristic Cyber-Monks also represent science," she said.

"Science, medication, death, and religion are all recurring themes in Hirst's work and he encourages us to think about ideas like our faith in pills to prolong our lives."

York residents can also see the modern monks performing in and around Exhibition Square and the Clifford's Tower areas of the city next Friday.

Works on show at the gallery will include limited edition signed prints such as the morbid Skull Beneath The Skin and screen prints from the Last Supper suite, a series of 13 pictures that mimic the packaging of the pharmaceutical industry.

The Tribal Arts Gallery will be displaying and selling the works until May 27. Opening hours are noon to 6pm Wednesday to Friday and 11am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.
