BLINK and you could miss the launch of the Revolving Gallery’s premiere event on Wednesday in the converted old chapel building of York St John University.
Set up by Elvington print designer Joe Calvert, York St John fine art technician and artist Nathan Chenery, graphic designer Tarot Conway and council events organiser Rowena Hammon, this event-based gallery will show original works in a range of venues throughout the year.
Each show will be for one night only, when the work of five professional artists from across Britain will be brought together. Each artist will provide a different style to the event, from the figurative through to large abstract works.
Taking part in Wednesday’s inaugural evening will be William Bradley, Freya Horsley, Patrick Smith, Paul Stone and Laura Alice.
Bradley is an abstract painter whose canvases are creating a stir in London. He studied art in York, and this is a good time to buy his art as his reputation is going from strength to strength.
Horsley needs no introduction to the York art scene as her atmospheric semi-abstract landscapes have won her awards and a loyal group of collectors in the city. Her multi-layered canvases and pastels take their inspiration from the surrounding moors, mountains and coasts.
Printmaker and painter Smith creates finely crafted monoprints and collagraphs through an inventive range of processes. He enjoys using colour and texture as a device to explore a sense of harmony and tension. Formerly an art tutor, he is now pursuing his own work full-time.
Stone, from Sheffield, specialises in figurative painting with a specific focus on still life and his precise oils and considered compositions highlight how much beauty everyday objects hold.
Alice is an emerging artist and illustrator from Saltaire whose paintings are inspired by nature and organic shapes. Her training in textiles has influenced the way she paints; her works exhibit areas of woven texture, repeat-pattern and sheets of overlapping colour.
The team behind Revolving Gallery believe their new venture is “all about the art”. They want the artwork to be explained, understood and appreciated, offering help along the way.
Consequently, the artists will be in attendance at the event to talk about their work, as well as their motivation and inspiration. Furthermore, the exhibits will be accompanied by photographs of the work in progress, following visits to the artists’ studios.
“Revolving Gallery hand selects individual pieces of artwork, building a reputation for quality, well-made art that holds its place as an investment,” says Joe. “The gallery ensures the highest standard of materials are used, while providing assurance that works are truly original, highlighting the provenance of each piece and the artists’ tutorage.”
Wednesday’s launch will begin with an after-work preview from 5pm to 6pm, followed by the main event from 7.30pm to 9pm, including the artists’ talk at 7.30pm. Admission is free.
