TWO new exhibitions at York’s Quilt Museum will give insights into the Second World War and Africa.
Opening tomorrow, Sewing in Wartime features quilts made by Canadian women who sent them to Britain as war relief. Generally the quilts were made quickly and were utilitarian in style, often being created from different scraps of material.
The second exhibition, which also opens tomorrow, is Under African Skies. This will see quilts Magie Relph has collected over a ten-year period on trips to Africa.
What began as a hobby has now expanded into a Fairtrade business, and the exhibition at the Peasholme Green museum will feature quilts made with African fabrics and information about the creators of the quilts.
