York St John University will be opening its doors to the public between May 19 and June 4 to showcase the talent of its faculty of arts’ graduating students.
The Create11 show will feature music, theatre and dance performances, fine art and product design exhibitions and film and television screenings.
Professor Steve Purcell, dean of the arts faculty, says: “Create11 is a highlight of our year, demonstrating the university’s support and commitment to developing the next wave of artists and cultural commentators.
“The showcase is also an important part of York’s contemporary cultural calendar and we invite people to come along and experience the diverse range of work on offer.”
This year, a series of short film screenings will be presented by final-year history and linguistics students.
The films were made as part of an interdisciplinary project with the Yorkshire Film Archive and provide an introduction to the history of commercial fishing in Hull, capturing the associated local dialects and accents, as well as slang and colloquialisms.
Dr Ian Horwood, senior lecturer in history, explains: “The films are truly collaborative efforts, with the students researching footage in the archive, conducting the oral history interviews, shooting the films, and editing the combined material. They give a fascinating historical insight into life in the fishing industry in Hull.”
The Create11 showcase will run at York St John and in selected York venues. Events and exhibitions are free and open to the public.
