TODAY and tomorrow will be the last chance to see the group show by Bar Lane Studios’ graduate artist interns, whose exhibition commemorates their year in residence at the York creative hub.
The group, comprising five artists and a theatre company, were the first set of York St John University arts graduates to take up residence at Bar Lane after it opened last year.
The university-funded internship scheme provides graduates with studio spaces, exhibition opportunities, work experience and professional mentoring to help them establish fledgling creative businesses.
Now, as they near the end of their year’s residence, the group have mounted a week-long showcase exhibition in Bar Lane’s main gallery.
Diverse artists Jade Blood, Susanne Davies, Matt Durrant, Tom Hodgson and Catherine Scriven are displaying vibrant new artworks, while all-female theatre company Six Lips – Anna Rose James, Roxanna Klimaszewska and Hannah Wallace – performed a new piece devised for the opening night last Friday.
“It’s amazing that a year has nearly passed and it’s produced some great success stories,” says Ben Clowes, Bar Lane’s project manager. “Susanne Davies is one: her installations have now been commissioned across the country and York St John has commissioned a new piece too.”
Bar Lane’s studio spaces are a hive of activity at present.
“In the Basement Gallery we have the York St John MA Fine Art Show – and the basement has never looked so good,” says Ben.
“From Monday next week we will also have the York College 3D Crafts BA show in Gallery Two, and I think this is the first time York College and York St John have exhibited with us at the same time. Very exciting!”
Looking ahead, Bar Lane Studios will hold its second Summer Open from August 1 to 27: a chance for “all artisans” to have their work exhibited in Gallery One, Two and the Basement.
Three pieces can be submitted per artist, at a submission charge of £15 plus VAT per piece and a £10 administrative charge per item sold. Please note, 2D work must be no larger than one metre by one metre; 3D work no larger than two metres by two metres by two metres.
Submission day is Saturday, July 23, between 11am and 6pm; collection for work not selected by the judging panel for the exhibition will be Monday, July 25, from 11am to 6pm; any work not collected on this day will be subject to a storage charge of £10 per day per item.
The exhibition will begin with a preview evening on Saturday, July 30, from 7pm to 9pm.
