Internationally-known York artist, Mark Hearld has presented a limited edition print of one of his works to York Art Gallery.
The print, Minster And Magpies, combines York’s most famous landmark, its Minster, with the artist’s interest in nature.
The “graphic punch” of the magpie, combined with the quiet reference to the Minster, “seemed a deeply York thing to do” explained Mark. The print, which has been commissioned by the Friends of York Art Gallery, was inspired by a walk along the city walls in late May.
Mark, well-known for his work on the film Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang, said he was constantly inspired by hidden bits of York but recognised the difficulty of seeing his home town afresh. Laura Turner, the gallery’s curator of art, said: “This is a fantastic piece of work. We are delighted that it will now become part of our collection”.
A limited edition run of 150 copies of Minster And Magpies will soon go on sale in the gallery shop for £225 each.
