YORK artist Sudeshna Chattopadhyay is exhibiting her oil and acrylic paintings at Pocklington Arts Centre until September 3.
Originally from Calcutta, Sudeshna likes to explore colour, pattern, texture and forms in figurative paintings that focus on women’s issues.
“Sudeshna sees women and their lives as a source of inspiration,” says the arts centre’s exhibition curator, Helen Steele.
“Her work may be described as narrative and its content revolves around women and their experiences of social space. She prefers to let the viewer give meaning to these works, in time and space, since what a piece of work means to her keeps shifting.”
In particular, Helen notes Sudeshna’s use of pastel shades. “These create an ambience of quiet serenity which I find extremely powerful,” she says.
Entry to the exhibition is free and all artworks are for sale. Opening hours are Tuesday, 10am to 5pm; Thursday, 10am to 1pm; Friday, 10am to 4pm; Saturday, 10am to 1pm.
