A DRESS with a real sense of direction has gone on show in York.

The Colonial Dress, which is now being displayed at York Art Gallery, is made entirely of world maps and shows Britain’s former colonies across the globe.

Designed by Susan Stockwell, it is aimed at highlighting the importance of the role of women during colonial times.

Jennifer Alexander, the gallery’s assistant director of fine art, said: “We knew about Susan’s styles of work from her Flood installation at York St Mary’s last year and we were delighted she has loaned the Colonial Dress to us.”

Made in 2008, the garment uses a wire and mesh glue to hold the maps in place, with its style dating back to the 1880s. It will remain on display until next year.
