KATE Kenney’s luscious landscapes are on show at The Café 68, Gillygate, York, until September 15.

“The exhibition is called Kate At 68 – and no, that’s not my age or the title of a retrospective, though a friend pointed out that the title might be misread. Oh well!” says Kate.

“The real explanation is that my exhibition of oil paintings of the Yorkshire Wolds and the Howardian Hills is in Café 68, one of York's most vibrant art cafés. It’s a great venue for viewing art work while relaxing with good food and friends.”

While the focus of Kate’s work as en plein air landscape painter continues to be “the gorgeous Wolds and Howardian Hills”, this show contains studio pieces too. “The weather hasn’t been kind so far this year,” she says.

Don’t ask Kate for a comprehensive arty explanation of her work. Instead she says: “I don’t find it easy to explain my work in ‘art speak’ as really it's the process of producing a painting that I find interesting: searching out a view that appeals, selecting the colours and then working the paint to try and produce a coherent whole –something that captures the beauty and tranquillity around me. It's immensely challenging and satisfying at the same time.”

The Café 68 is open daily; see thecafe_68gillygate@hotmail.co.uk for more details.

Looking ahead, Kate has another upcoming show, a shared one with fellow en plain air landscape artist Stephen Barnsley in the Triton Gallery at Sledmere, near Driffield. Entitled At The Very Heart Of It, it will run from August 19 to 24, 11am to 4.30pm, closed on August 20.

First comes tonight’s preview evening for Kate At 68, where delicious tasters will be served from the Café 68 menu from 7pm. Everyone is welcome.
