CITY Screen, York is marking the centenary of the Great War with a series of films and events this year. Coming next is Sunday’s 5pm screening of Paths Of Glory (PG) and an evening of war poetry to look back on those tumultuous times.
Stanley Kubrick’s film lays bare the horror of war as soldiers face execution to placate tyrannical officers after their plans go awry. Banned in France for many years, Kubrick’s movie unflinchingly recounts one of the darkest moments of military history as an army general orders his own troops be fired on when Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) refuses to send his men over the top into a suicidal assault on the German trenches.
Professor Gary Craig, or York’s Alternative History group, will make a brief introduction. After the screening, the evening’s focus turns to The Basement for Those Long Uneven Lines: The Poetry Of war & Conflict, hosted by York performance poet Henry Raby.
This 7.15pm event runs independently of the film and costs £5. Performers include York playwright Mike Kenny, reading from his new commission for Derby Theatre, The Odyssey, and Hull poet Catharine Scott, who worked as a counsellor with war veterans for 16 years, plus David Lindsay and John Gilham. Box office: 0871 902 5726.
