• THIS weekend’s Sunday Special at City Screen is Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere (12A) at 8pm. From the director of Lost In Translation and the ambitious 2006 period biopic Marie Antionette comes a bittersweet indie-movie drama about the pressure of lives lived under the spotlight.
While wallowing in a pool of self-loathing in his Chateau Marmont retreat, Marco (Stephen Dorff) is tracked down by his estranged 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Elle Fanning), who forces him to reassess his priorities and playboy lifestyle.
Somewhere, incidentally, won the Golden Lion at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival.
• CITY Screen’s California Classics season continues on Tuesday with 8.45pm screening of Alexander Payne’s 2004 comedy Sideways (15). Two old friends (Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church) set off on a wine-tasting road trip, but soon it veers dizzily sideways into a wry exploration of the vicissitudes of love and friendship, the damnable persistence of loneliness and dreams and the war between Pinot and Cabernet.
