WEDNESDAY’S 6.10pm preview screening of the new French romp Potiche (15) at City Screen, York, will be followed by a satellite question-and-answer session with lead actress Catherine Deneuve and director Francois Ozon, hosted by Jason Solomons.

Deneuve plays Suzanne, the passive wife of factory owner Robert (Fabrice Luchini), a bristly tyrant of his domestic and professional realms. Her life changes abruptly, however, when the workers go on strike, taking her defiant husband hostage.

Suzanne steps in to restore pride to the family name and pick the business up off its knees, but when she calls old flame Maurice (Gerard Depardieu) to assist in bringing the workforce back onside, matters turn complicated as his long-buried feelings are stirred by her playfulness.

Ebullient humour is mixed with oh-so-French charm in a Seventies setting as Ozon brings out the lighter aspects of French cinema to giddy effect.

Potiche will bring a week-long run at City Screen on July 1. Box office: 0871 902 5726 or picturehouses.co.uk

• PRODUCER Hilary Durman will be joined by special guests for a Q&A at City Screen, York, after Tuesday’s 8.30pm screening of the British documentary Donor Unknown, Adventures In The Sperm Trade (12A).

Jerry Rothwell’s film follows the story of JoEllen Marsh as she searches for her sperm donor father, who she knows only as Donor 150.

The moving, surprising and amusing Donor Unknown raises questions about identity, family, fatherhood and the strange power of genetic connections.

Joining Durman for the post-show discussion will be Dr Allan Pacey, from the department of reproductive and developmental medicine at the University of Sheffield, infertility counsellor Sheila Pike, Christine Gunter, of UK Donorlink, and Cathy Sidaway, from the National Gamete Donation Trust.

• THE Sunday Special at City Screen, York this weekend is veteran Chinese filmmaker Zhuangzhuang Tian’s action thriller The Warrior And The Wolf (18) at 8pm.

Typically epic but surprisingly short at 101 minutes, it centres on a battle between ancient foes. Fierce army commander General Zhang (Chung Hua Tou) moulds a young soldier, Lu Shenkang (Jo Odagiri), in his own image, and when Zhang is wounded in combat, Lu takes the reins.

Forced to seek refuge with his men in a village when the bitter winter weather bites, Lu will have his leadership skills put to their severest test after a woman (Maggie O) reveals a dark secret that haunts her tribe. Lurking on the outskirts is a mysterious pack of wolves, soon to make its presence known.
