I don`t know how often the NCEM has seen audience dancing and clapping along in time to the music, but the performance by this hilarious, spirited 7-piece left no alternative.

Frontman/vocalist Natty Bo, in retro spats, faux leopard-skin hat and white dinner jacket, plus retro dancing onstage, demanded audience participation and got it in spades.

He prefaced the Bagel Man song by throwing said bread rolls out to the audience and led us in a conga-style dance around the room.

The band website says the music is covers of old calypsos, mambos and Yiddish tunes, so few were familiar apart from Andrews Sisters hit Bei Mir Bist Du Shoen and the old Hebrew song Tzena Tzena Tzena, with the insertion of The Internationale in the middle.

The musicianship was of staggeringly high quality. Ex-Leeds College of Music saxophonist/ clarinettist Dave Bitelli`s credits include Jools Holland bands, Elton John and Joe Jackson, while drummer Roy Dodds accompanies Jacqui Dankworth and Billy Jenkins among many others.

The stratospheric, yet pure-toned solos from young Cuban trumpeter Eikel Venegas on a Peanut Vendor-style vamp were jaw-dropping and wacky guitarist Ben Mandelson interjected witty banter and announcements along with expert fills and solos.

The capacity audience was drawn in by the promise of something different, and word will certainly spread of a night of infectious entertainment by this London band.

Tickets will fly out for their next visit to York. Top marks to JSS for good PA sound levels, too.
