EVER since Sam Carter released his debut album, Keepsakes, in 2009, mounting excitement has accompanied this acoustic folk songwriter, guitarist and singer.
At the time he was an emerging artist in residence at the Southbank Centre in London, and his rise has continued with a support slot on a Bellowhead British tour; performances in the Middle East and Britain for the British Council’s Shifting Sands project; and playing to thousands in the all-star line-up for The Lady: A Homage To Sandy Denny tour.
He has performed on major festival stages in his own right and walked away with Horizon Award for best newcomer at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
“His arrival hasn’t gone unnoticed by some of the finest singer-songwriters and guitarists in the world today,” says Please Please You promoter Joe Coates. “In the three years since Keepsakes was released, he has performed alongside Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, Chris Wood and Martin Simpson.
“Last year he released a really good second album, The No Testament, performed at the Sandy Denny Tribute Show at the Barbican in London and on the BBC, and did Later…With Jools Holland too. Now he’s playing the first Please Please You and Black Swan Folk Club joint show.”
In support will be Stuart Giddens & Pip Jopling. Tickets cost £10 in advance on 0871 902 5726 or £12 on the door.
Please Please You and Black Swan Folk Club present Sam Carter, The Basement, City Screen, York, next Friday (March 8), 8pm.
