DIRECT from the Grapelli Camp in the Netherlands and DjangoFest in the United States, York jazz promoters J-Night present gipsy jazz musicians Tim Kliphuis and Paulus Schaffer at York Theatre Royal on Tuesday.

“Violinist Tim Kliphuis’s style is totally new, yet steeped in tradition, taking the music of Vivaldi, Beethoven and Paganini, blending it with Grappelli’s gipsy jazz, then adding Celtic folk and world music techniques,” says J-Night director David Porter.

Kliphuis was classically trained and first made his name playing with the fiery European gipsy guitarists but soon developed a crossover style that has taken him to classical, jazz and folk venues across the world.

Paulus Schaffer was born into the Dutch Sinti gipsy community and was tutored in the gipsy jazz guitar style by Wasso Grünholz, a legend within the Sinti community, and his nephew Stochelo Rosenberg.

At Tuesday’s 7.30pm concert, Kliphuis, Schaffer and their band will be evoking the spirit of Django Reinhardt. Tickets are on sale on 01904 623568 or online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk
