THE final of the NCEM Composers’ Award 2013 takes place at the National Centre for Early Music, York, on Saturday night.

Presented in association with BBC Radio 3 and international early music ensemble Florilegium, the 7.30pm event will feature Music for the Dance performed by Florilegium director Ashley Solomon, on flute and recorder, and fellow musicians Bojan Cicic, violin and viola d’amore, Jennifer Morsches, cello and piccolo cello, and Julian Perkins, harpsichord.

The finalists in the age 19 to 25 category are Seán Doherty with his piece Springar; Marianna Filippi, The Charlatan’s Masquerade; and Joseph Howard, Move!.

In the 18-and-under category, the chosen four are Lillie Harris’s The Dahomey Amazons Take A Tea Break; Kethaki Prathivadi’s Vivimos El Tango; Lilly Vadaneaux’s Sarabande; and Yuanfan Yang’s Crushed Suites.

The concert will be given in front of a panel of judges: Chris Wines, senior music producer, BBC Radio 3; Ashley Solomon, director of Florilegium; and Delma Tomlin, director of the National Centre for Early Music.

The winners will be announced after Saturday’s concert, which will be opened and closed by Florilegium with Baroque works by Leclair and Rebel.

The winning pieces will be performed by Florilegium at Bath International Music Festival on June 1 and recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show on June 23 at 1pm.
