COSMIC country and chamber folk musician Dan Haywood has been added to the bill for the opening gig of 2013 at The Band Room, Low Mill, Farndale, near Kirkbymoorside, on Sunday.

Described as England’s answer to Nashville collective Lambchop, Haywood has released a triple album, New Hawks, that the Independent On Sunday deemed to be “both engaging and oddly uplifting while also being as dour in texture as a North Sea shoreline”.

The headline act at Sunday’s May Bank Holiday concert will be the resurgent American folk legend Michael Hurley, whose songs have been covered by Calexico, Cat Power, Espers, Vetiver and Violent Femmes.

“Michael was born in the same year as Bob Dylan – 1941– and continues to improve with age,” says Band Room promoter Nigel Burnham. “There are still too few of us who ‘get’ Michael Hurley, but those of us who do have a friend for life.”

Incidentally, Michael’s first daughter is called Daffodil, so where better for him to play this weekend than in the “Daffodil Valley” of Farndale. “The Lenten lilies are very late and not quite as prolific this year, but they have started to dazzle once more and will probably be at their best over May Bank Holiday weekend,” says Nigel.

“We’re wondering whether Mr Hurley might like to stroll down to the River Dove and take in some of John Craven’s favourite UK walk, which starts at The Band Room.”
