THE University of Victoria Philomela Women’s Choir, on tour from Canada, will perform in aid of York Mind at St Helen’s Church, York, on Tuesday at 7.30pm.
They will move on to Great Broughton Village Hall the following night, again at 7.30pm, before travelling on to Oxford, Exeter and Salisbury.
On this two-week tour, director Mary Kennedy is taking the singers to places she herself has been and the choir is being hosted in several venues by Kennedy’s college friends and family.
Mary attended Dartington College of Arts in Totnes, Devon in the 1960s and has remained in contact with many of her friends from those days, and now she is anxious to introduce her students to the beauty of England on this eight-date tour that also will visit Cambridge, Dartington, and Swanage.
Their programme will take in music from England, France and the United States. “However, the most unusual part of their repertoire is the Canadiana, by the likes of Lydia Adams, Mark Sirett, James Gordon and Wade Hemsworth, most of which is practically unknown over here,” says The Press classical music correspondent Martin Dreyer. “Interspersed with all the choral singing will be vocal and instrumental interludes by choir members. They are multi-talented.”
• Tickets cost £7.50, concessions £6, on 01904 636111 or on the door and the price includes a programme.
