The YO1 Festival is back for a second year, and this time it is moving to the York Racecourse, on Knavesmire, for a bigger event on Sunday.

Artists booked by organiser John Drysdale to play the main stage include two of the hottest new acts in the UK: Hackney quartet Rudimental, promoting their debut album, Home, and AlunaGeorge, the London electronic duo of Aluna Francis and George Reid, who were shortlisted for the Critics’ Choice at the 2013 Brit Awards. Last week, you may have seen them performing on BBC2’s Later…With Jools Holland. Other notable highlights will be BBC Radio 1 DJ Jackmaster, who will bring the party mood to York, along with DJ Oneman.

Not only contemporary dance music will be represented at this weekend’s event, however. Look out for dub reggae legends Channel One Sound Syystem and York’s Irie Vibes Sound System on the Irie Vibes stage, and House DJ Greymatter and lanky Yorkshire lad Paul Bailey-Hague on the Circulation stage.

New bands Hookworms, Paws and Cowtown will grace the Please Please You stage, along with York rising stars Fawn Spots. Stalwart York troubadour Boss Caine will play his part on the Bison Coffee House stage, as will The Cubical, Fox North Coalition, Serious Sam Barrett, from Leeds, and East Riding singer-songwriter Edwina Hayes.

There is more to the festival that music on five stages. “We also have York Does Vintage, hosted by Now and Then events in its own tent, and there’ll be street food vendors curated by Northern StrEats and a real ale festival,” says YO1 assistant manager Ellen Davies. “We also have alternative acts in the form of theatre, magicians and graffiti artists.

“And this year’s YO1 embraces the fact we love food. NorthernstrEats, one of the leading lights in the north’s street food boom, bring a selection of their cooperative to satisfy your taste buds at this year’s festival, including Create, Diamond Dogs, Portland Truckers Pizza Co, Manjit’s Kitchen and El Kantina and a name that looks curtailed but isn’t, Fish &.”

The YO1 micro ale festival will feature 20 ales and ciders from such breweries as Leeds, Roosters, Copper Dragon, Wold Top, Big River, Great Newsome, Caledonian, Hop Studios and the Yorkshire Brewing Co.

“Britain Does Vintage are bringing York Does Vintage to YO1 for the second year,” says Ellen. “Forget rows and rows of denim shorts; at York Does Vintage there really is something for everyone – veteran festival-goers, fashionistas, and even the kids won’t be disappointed.”

Entry will be from 11.30am and the festival will close at 11pm, but two official after-festival parties will be taking place at The Duchess and Tokyo, free to wristband wearers before midnight.

Festival tickets cost £20 for adults; under 12s are admitted for free. For full details on other ticket types, restrictions and all terms and conditions, see yo1events.co.uk, where you can find out the full music line-up too.

“That’s where festival tickets can be purchased but there are some paper ones left too in Amanda’s on Micklegate and Bison Coffee House on Heslington Road,” says Ellen.
