YORK choir Prima Vocal Ensemble are preparing for a spring trip to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall.

This “amazing opportunity” is the result of Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) inviting the jazz, Broadway and soul choir to participate in the world premiere of Christopher Tin’s The Drop That Contained The Sea on Sunday, April 13.

Musical director Ewa Birch has begun rehearsals of Tin’s classical/world music song cycle for choir, orchestra and soloists in multiple languages, which forms the sequel to his double Grammy-winning debut, Calling All Dawns. His new work is based on an ancient text about water.

Dr Jonathan Griffith, co-founder, artistic director and principal conductor for DCINY, explains the York choir’s involvement in this American premiere.

“Prima Vocal Ensemble received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers,” he says. “It’s quite an honour just to be invited to perform in New York, and these wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community.”

Before they cross the Pond, Prima Vocal Ensemble will present Talkin ‘Bout My Generation at St Michael le Belfrey Church, York on, March 29 at 7.30pm.

“This show will be a showcase of memorable moments in chart history with a snapshot of each decade from the Fifties through Sixties flower power and classic rock to the Noughties, offering plenty of ‘Where were you when?’ moments,” says Ewa.

• Tickets will be available at £10 from the York Theatre Royal box office, 01904 623568, or on the door.
