DE La Soul will headline the YO1 Festival in York on May 4 as they return to Britain to mark the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut album, 3 Feet High And Rising.
Voted album of the year by NME, its colourful burst of neo-psychedelic samples, playful wordplay and witty skits by the trio of Posdnuos, Trugoy The Dove and Pasemaster Mase sounded like nothing else in hip-hop and still does.
Not only psychedelia but also pop, jazz and reggae held sway over the usual influences of old-school rap or funk on such pioneering numbers as Me Myself And I, Eye Know and The Magic Number.
In 2006, De La Soul won a Grammy for their collaboration with Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz on Feel Good Inc and they last released a single, Get Away, last May. One year on, they will play London, Manchester, Glasgow, Leamington Spa and Bristol as well as York, their only Yorkshire date.
The YO1 Festival will be spread over eight stages at Knavesmire, complemented by a mini-food festival and craft beer event.
