WATCHING tribute bands can be a bit of a hit and miss affair. Thankfully, it was the former when the Hull-based ELO Experience rocked into York last Thursday.
The group, which last year won The National Tribute Awards, are diehard ELO fans and their affection for Jeff Lynne and co shines through in their music.
Lead singer Andy Louis, a former Elvis Presley impersonator, was superb as sharp-dressed Jeff Lynne. And yes, that Kevin Keegan-style hairdo was in fact a wig! Louis was backed by the talented Tony Dawson (drums), Jan Christiansen (lead guitar), Pete Smith (bass guitar), Steve Helmsley (keyboards and electronic voice) plus the classical trio of Vivienne and Emily Blackledge and Clare Little, on cellos and violin.
The night was a non-stop trip through the career of one of Britain’s most distinctive bands – All Over The World, Evil, Woman, Showdown, Xanadu, Sweet Talking Woman, Wild West Hero and Hold On Tight to name but a few.
Last Train To London even changed its destination to York! The finale brought the much-awaited anthems Mr Blue Sky and Don’t Bring Me Down and with them much waving of glo sticks!
Louis, who had a great rapport with the audience, said although two former ELO band members had watched the show and gave their support, Lynne had yet to attened one of their concerts.
Maybe it’s time that he did.
