BACK in York , this time with their new Baby Love Tour, named in honour of the 50th anniversary of The Supremes’ first UK number one, The Magic Of Motown show celebrates three decades of the legendary Detroit record label’s greatest hits.
Show choreographer and male lead singer Andre Lejaune certainly knew how to get the audience into the groove, his good-humoured chuckle and great presence on stage whipping up the excitement as the other performers took to the stage.
The first half saw tributes to The Four Tops, The Supremes and The Temptations, as well as a fantastic acapella version of The Drifters' Under The Boardwalk and a superb rendition of I Heard It Through The Grapevine, all accompanied by slick moves and even slicker costumes that really captured the Motown vibe.
The second half brought even more delights, with highlights including a heartfelt duet of Lionel Richie’s My Endless Love and an excellent ensemble performance of Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston’s It Takes Two.
It culminated in a massively entertaining tribute to The Jackson Five and the late Michael Jackson, with female singer Amara Smith absolutely stealing the show as the young King of Pop, complete with outlandish Seventies' attire and some truly enormous afro wigs.
The Magic of Motown show has cast its spell again, the performers’ clear love for the music and amazing talents making this a must-see show for anyone with a hankering for something soulful with plenty of heart.
