THE success of last June’s York Rocks Against Cancer has spawned another fund-raising event designed to appeal to all ages this spring.
The entertainment wing of York Against Cancer is to stage York Swings Against Cancer at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on Sunday, May 18 at 7pm.
“With the upsurge of modern-day popular artists turning their hand, well actually voices, to swing music and re-makes of popular classics regularly selling well in music stores and online, we thought there was definitely a need for a swing night in the city,” says Ian Surgenor, who was the backbone of last year’s York Rocks concert.
“We realised there’s a wealth of local talent in the city to support such an event and we’ve called on a new kid on the block, Tom Marlow, to act as musical director.
Tom has just finished working on York Stage Musicals’ show The Phantom Of The Opera as their musical director and he’s hand-picking the musicians who will perform on the night.”
All the swings sounds of Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Buble, Robbie Williams and more besides will be celebrated on May 18.
Julie Russell, general manager of York Against Cancer, says: “We’re delighted and excited that once more York people are taking to the stage and performing on our behalf to support our charity. We’re sure that York Swings Against Cancer will prove to be both entertaining and a successful fundraiser to help people affected by cancer.”
Tickets cost £12, concessions £10, and are available from the York Against Cancer office in North Moor Road, Huntington, by phone on 01904 764466 or by emailing office@yorkagainstcancer.org.uk
