REMEMBER Penetration, Pauline Murray’s band that formed in late 1976, inspired by the era’s cult New York bands, The Sex Pistols and the first wave of British punk?
Tomorrow, York gig promoters TV’s Over present Murray, left, and co at Fibbers in York, where the Patti Smith-influenced North Eastern vocalist will be performing with bassist Robert Blamire, guitarists Paul Harvey and Steve Wallace and drummer Kev Hodgson.
“Although they hailed from a pit village in County Durham, Penetration’s first gig was at the legendary Roxy Club, in London, in April 1977,” recalls TV’s Over’s Chris Jones. “They soon built up a live following and released their debut single, Don’t Dictate - considered a punk classic - on Virgin Records that year.”
Second single Firing Squad, extensive gigging with headline shows and Buzzcocks, Stranglers and Vibrators support slots soon followed, leading up to the 1978 release of debut Moving Targets.
“The non-stop activity took its toll and the band announced they were splitting up at the end of 1979,”says Chris.
All of 22 years later, Penetration re-formed. Expect their set to incorporate favourites Lovers Of Outrage, Silent Community, Free Money and Shout Above The Noise, along with recent singles The Feeling and Our World.
Joining Penetration on the 8pm bill will be Obsessive Compulsive and Percy. Tickets at fibbers.co.uk
