THE spectacular sights and sounds of traditional Chinese opera open the Chinese New Year celebrations at the National Centre for Early Music in York tomorrow.
To mark the Chinese Year of the Pig, the London Jing Kun Opera Association presents a colourful and varied programme of Jingju (Beijing) Opera and Kunqu Opera at 7.30pm, when the stories of love and sacrifice highlighted in Parting At The Kiln and The Assassination Of The Tiger are brought out by the company's choreographed movements and touching arias.
Ensemble music with traditional Chinese instruments adds to the variety. Tickets cost £12, concessions £10, on 01904 658338.
London Jing Kun Opera also will be offering Chinese opera face painting for adults and children tomorrow from 2pm to 5pm at the NCEM.
On Sunday, as part of Residents' First Weekend in York, Chinese community artist Linda Tomlinson joins in the New Year festivities with her Happy Bat, Pigs and Dragons Craft Day from 2pm to 4pm, again at the NCEM. At these craft workshop sessions for all the family, you can make Chinese paper dragons, celebratory Year of the Pig lanterns, New Year cards and Money Packets, the traditional New Year red envelope money presents given to Chinese children.
